April 7 is World Health Day, set aside by the World Health Organization to raise awareness and offer suggestions for people all over the globe. For 2012, the theme of World Health day is health and aging. The world’s population is aging at an unprecedented rate due to better overall access to health care, including vaccinations from infectious diseases and some medications, and nutrition. More people than ever are living to see their grandchildren and great-grandchildren (and even beyond!), but keeping them safe and well over a longer lifespan is a test on many fronts.
In America, most people have access to clean water, healthy food, basic medical care and shelter from the elements. Our health challenges are more lifestyle based—how we manage our time, food and self-care. Is your lifestyle going to carry you to the next stage of life gracefully?
Obesity is one of the biggest health problems facing Americans today, because it can be a contributing factor to other painful or dangerous conditions, including arthritis, Type 2 Diabetes, sleep apnea and heart disease. This crisis is affecting the health both of individuals—one in three Americans is obese-- and of the American health care system. Taking steps to “right the ship” will work to everyone’s benefit.
Being healthy and feeling energetic allows us to fully embrace life’s tasks and trials. Jeremiah’s words let us know there missions awaiting us. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jer. 29:11)
